Waste classification

Waste is classified, depending on its origin, as municipal and special waste, as well as, based on its level of danger, as hazardous and non-hazardous waste.

Municipal waste is:

1. household waste, including bulky items, from premises and places used for residential purposes;
2. non-hazardous waste, from premises and places used for uses other than those referred to in the previous paragraph, that is assimilated to municipal waste in terms of quality and quantity, as stated in municipal regulations;
3. waste from street sweeping;
4. waste of any nature or origin to be found on roads and public areas or on roads and private areas if these areas are of public use, or on beaches and banks of waterways;
5. vegetable waste from green areas such as gardens, parks and cemetery areas;
6. waste from exhumations and extumulations, as well as other waste from cemetery activities other than those referred to in paragraphs 1, 2, 3.

Special waste is:

• vegetable waste from agriculture and forestry;
• wastes from demolition and construction activities, as well as hazardous waste from excavation activities;
• industrial waste;
• waste from handicrafts;
• waste from commercial activities;
• waste from service activities;
• waste produced during waste recovery and disposal activities, sludges produced by water purification and other treatments and from wastewater purification and fume reduction;
• waste from treatment activities;
• deteriorated and obsolete machinery and equipment;
• motor-operated vehicles and their parts no longer in use.
